When it comes to hiring a professional for on the wall TV installation, it’s important that you select the right mounting bracket for your television and for your wall mounting situation. So today, we’re going to cover a few tips on how to shop for a TV mounting bracket that’s right for you.
On the Wall TV Installation: Choosing a TV Mount
The VESA Hole Pattern
We’ve talked about VESA hole patterns here before, but let’s quickly recap. The VESA hole pattern on your TV measures the distance between the mounting holes on the back of your television. The VESA pattern of your TV is measured in millimeters with the horizontal measurement coming before the vertical measurement.
When shopping for a TV mounting bracket for your TV, the VESA pattern MUST be compatible with the VESA pattern of the mount you select. Most TV mounts you will find are designed to meet a range of VESA patterns.
What Type of TV Mount Are You Looking For?
There are various types of TV mounts available and it’s up to you to decide which type of TV mount is right for you.
A fixed TV mount is a mount that simply holds your television on the wall, it does not move at all.
A tilting TV mount is a mount that holds your TV on the wall but has the ability to tilt up and down. This can be a useful feature when you have glare that may hit your TV screen during a certain period of the day or if you have children who like to sit on the floor to watch TV and need a different viewing angle.
A swivel TV mount is a TV mount that can be pulled away from the wall and swiveled to allow viewers to see your TV screen from various areas of the room. For example, if you have a pool table next to your living room and would like to see the TV from the table when you are playing pool, you would be able to swivel the screen around to face the pool table rather than the sofa.
A fully articulated mount is a TV mount that both swivels and tilts allowing your television to be viewed from various areas and angles. This is the most versatile TV mount for the largest viewing area.
The Weight of Your TV
When it comes to on the wall TV installation, the weight of your TV determines whether or not your TV should be wall mounted, but it also determines what type of mount you should invest in.
When you purchase a TV wall mount, the packaging for that mount will have a size range listed in inches, but it will also have a weight limitation. For example, it may say “this television wall mount fits most TVs from 32-65 inches and up to 165 pounds in weight.” In this instance, if your TV is 42 inches but 170 pounds, this TV mount will not be compatible for your TV. If, however, your TV is 42 inches and 100 pounds, then this mount will be a good option for you.
On the Wall TV Installation Location
The area where you want to install your TV also impacts the type of TV mount that you purchase. For example, are you having your TV mounted on an outside wall on your lanai? If so, you need to be sure that the wall mount you invest in is rated for outdoor use. This means that the TV mount will be coated to protect it against the elements whereas an indoor TV mount will not be coated the same way.
Brand
Choosing a brand for your TV wall mount isn’t a big deal for some people, but it is important to pay attention to whether your TV wall mount is a brand name or off-name brand. Off name brands can be quality products, but they can also be cheaply made products that will fail you at some point. We always recommend going with a name brand TV mount, no matter what name brand you prefer. If you don’t know which name brand to go with, do a little online research and see what the professionals recommend.
