TV Mounting: Wall Mounting Questions and Answers

How High Should I Mount My TV?

The height of your TV mount should be at a level that’s comfortable for viewing while sitting. We recommend sitting in your favorite seat in the room and focusing on a point on the wall where it’s comfortable to look. You don’t want to strain your neck or turn your head in a way that would be uncomfortable, you want to choose a spot where it’s naturally comfortable to look. Use this as a guide for where the center of your television should be.

It’s always best to have a professional installation expert to help you with ensuring that your television is mounted at the right height and on the level. The installation expert can also make sure that when you do mount your television, that it’s securely anchored to the wall even if you aren’t mounting it to the studs.

What Type of TV Mount Do I Need?

There are a number of factors that influence which TV mount is right for your needs.

The first consideration is the VESA pattern. This is the measurement (in mm) between the holes on the back of the television. The VESA pattern is what ensures that the TV mount you select fits onto your television perfectly. If you purchase a TV mount that has the wrong VESA pattern, it’s important to return it and purchase one with the right VESA pattern to be sure that your TV is stable and secure.

The second consideration is the weight range of the TV mount. You always want to purchase a TV mount that is made to support the weight of your television. Purchasing a mount that isn’t rated for your TV weight is dangerous and can lead to your mount warping, bending, or falling off the wall with your TV!

The third consideration is the use of your TV mount. Will you be using your mount indoors or outdoors or a little bit of both? This is important because TV mounts that are used outdoors require weatherproofing to protect against rust and degradation. Using an indoor TV mount outdoors can cause rust and warping that can result in your TV crashing to the ground.

Lastly, you need to consider how much flexibility or motion you want from your TV mount. Do you simply want a mount that fixes your TV flat to the wall or do you want a mount that offers various viewing angles? You can choose from stationary TV mounts, TV mounts that tilt up and down, TV mounts that pull out from the wall, and TV mounts that have a full range of motion moving left and right, forward and back, and tilting.

How Do I Choose a Wall Mount For My TV?

Knowing what you’re looking for in a TV mount is a great first step, but you may find that you quickly become overwhelmed with the different brands of TV mounts that are available. The best way to find a TV mount that will suit your needs and that is from a reputable brand is to talk to your TV installation company. Here at Gulf Coast Installations, we have experience installing plenty of TV mount brands and have a good idea of which brands of tv mounts are better quality and longer-lasting.

Another method of choosing a wall mount for your TV is to do your online research. Take a look at what professionals in the electronics industry are saying about the different brands available and also look at what other customers are saying about mounts that they purchased. Pay attention to mounts that are recommended by professionals and that are highly rated by customers who have had the same mount installed in their homes.
