Decorative lighting installation isn’t always as simple as it might look! Depending on the fixture you have chosen and your current lighting setup, installation can be a real nightmare! That’s why today, we’re sharing some decorative lighting installation tips from the pros.
6 Decorative Lighting Installation Tips
1. It’s All in the Planning
When installing more complex decorative lighting – like recessed lighting fixtures – make sure that you plan ahead of time so that you have enough time to complete the project. This type of project is a multi-day task, if you can’t dedicate multiple days to it, we suggest getting a professional to do the job so your home doesn’t look like a war zone for weeks!

2. Don’t “Go Cheap”
Whether you’re looking at the decorative lighting fixtures themselves or the tools you will need for installation, don’t “go cheap”. As with most things, you get what you pay for when doing DIY. Cheap fixtures and cheap tools will make your job harder and often lead to your new setup looking like an amateur attempt at DIY.
If you don’t want to invest in the proper tools to get the job done right, give us a call! We have a team of professional decorative lighting installation experts and they all have a whole arsenal of the best tools on the market.
3. Safety First
You wouldn’t think it was necessary to mention, but we have had a few too many calls from clients who have frazzled a thing or two in their efforts at lighting installation! Unless you want to be the guy who shocked himself so hard that he fell from the ladder and cracked his head open on the fireplace consequently needing twenty-five stitches, BE SAFE!
If you aren’t confident in your ability to work with electrics, we highly recommend calling in the professionals. The pros can get the job done simply and you don’t end up looking like Frankenstein.
4. Don’t Improvise
This is one of the most important things we HAVE to emphasize when it comes to decorative lighting installation – don’t improvise! If you don’t know what you’re doing, hire a professional. If you don’t have the right tools on hand, get them.
If you have zero electrical experience…step away from the project and call in the cavalry to do the job instead!
5. Know Your Fixture
Depending on your decorative fixture, the weight of the piece can vary dramatically. Why does this matter? Because unless you want that huge chandelier to come crashing to the ground, you need to make sure that the box you use during installation is sturdy enough to hold the fixture weight.
Not sure what box we’re talking about? Put down that screwdriver and call in the professionals!
6. Pre-Assembly Saves Trouble
If you have a more complicated decorative lighting fixture it can be tedious to try and put things together when you’re at the top of a ladder! That’s why we always recommend that you pre-assemble as much of your lighting fixture as possible while you are on the ground!
