Installation Art Tips: Making Your Newest Piece Shine
If you’ve recently invested in a new art piece or if you’ve had your art collection sitting around for far too long, it’s time to do those pieces the justice that they deserve! And we’re going to share some great tips with you today to make sure that your display is everything it should be!
Hang Your Pieces at Eye Level
If you are displaying single pieces or anything other than a cluster, you want to hang at eye level. Of course, this isn’t possible when you’re hanging ten small pieces in a display, but your larger pieces will always look best when hung at eye level for someone who is between 5’6″ and 5’8″ tall. This means that you can admire your pieces without craning your neck and that your art is positioned well on the wall without large “white space” on either side.
Go With Disarray or Perfect Order
When displaying groups of artwork, you can either choose to go with a cluttered look of disarray – one where disorder is the order, or you can go with order. Going with an ordered display, you want to make sure that each piece you hang falls into a pattern and that each piece is an equal distance from the other. This means that you’re going to have to break out the measuring tape and use the level, to be sure that everything is just so.
It’s also important to note that not all pieces are going to look as intended if you display them in a chaotic way. For example, very feminine and delicate pieces of work are going to be better suited to an organized display.
Theme or Variety
Just as we recommend going with either a chaotic display or an ordered display, we also recommend that you go with a themed display or complete variety. For example, if you want to go with a themed display, use the same frames for each piece that will be in that display. Conversely, if you want to go with a chaotic look, incorporate plenty of variety in the frames you are using so that your lack of theme is your theme.
When creating a chaotic theme like this, we recommend really running the gamut in frame styles and mixing and matching different sized pieces.
Utilize Matting
It can be tempting to save money and pick up affordable picture frames at the store and hang your art yourself. This often means that you go without matting your art pieces. We never recommend doing this! You have invested in your artwork and you should also invest in your artwork display. You don’t have to purchase the most expensive frames, but go with frames that reflect the quality of your art and be sure that your pieces are matted. This will really make each piece stand out and do your display the justice it deserves!
Make Sure Your Art Pieces Complement Each Other
Making sure that your art pieces complement each other doesn’t necessarily mean choosing pieces from the same collection. It does mean finding common threads that tie each piece in a display together. For example, your subject matter should be similar – you don’t want African wildlife displayed beside beachside pieces. You also want to be sure that your color schemes work well together. For example, if all of your pieces have a similar color scheme, you can arrange pieces however you desire. If, however, your pieces vary on the color spectrum, try displaying them in a way that keeps similar colors together and runs the spectrum from dark to light.
